All the cool tips you need to know about web hosting

Are you looking for a new internet home? How much are you willing to pay to host your personal or business website? Do you know what are the exact services you will pay for? Are you planning to change your hosting provider but you can't decide which package is the best? Is linux hosting better than windows? In case you look for answers to any of the questions above, simply keep on reading!

If you want to own your official website or start your new internet business, you should consider where to host it. In order to have your site available 24 hours every day, you need to place it in an appropriate server. The hosting only relates to the place (server) your site is saved and the way it is served to visitors. A web hosting service is a type of internet service that allows people and companies to make their websites accessible via the world wide web. Web hosts are online businesses that provide space on a server owned or leased for use by clients. These providers also offer internet connectivity, typically in a Data Center.

Personal web site hosting is normally free, advertisement-sponsored, or inexpensive. Business web site hosting often has a higher cost. A business or complex site often requires a full package that provides database support and application development platforms (e.g. PHP, Java, Ruby on Rails, etc). These platforms allow customers to write or install programs (scripts) for applications like forums and content management systems. Also, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is typically used for e-commerce. Are you confused? Lets be more practical... How much does it cost to host a very simple web site? Well, I believe the cheapest way (shared hosting) will cost you 2.5 euros a month! But I'm talking about reliable web hosting.

The web hosting company may also provide a user interface or Control Panel for managing the web server and installing scripts (applications), as well as other modules like e-mail. Three scripts that are widely used are WordPress, Drupal and Joomla. As a result, you may find several companies advertising their wordpress hosting or drupal hosting services. Some hosts specialize in certain software or services (e.g. e-commerce), which are commonly used by larger companies or organisations.

Another important thing is your location. Hosting in Europe? Asia? Africa? The data centers of your provider shouldn't be too far away from you.

Site hosting characteristics - Uptime, Disk Space, Monthly Traffic and more stuff! Instead of jargon, plain english is used! Don't miss all the practical tips a

Quality & Economical Web Hosting
Quality & Economical Web Hosting

The Availability of a site is measured by the percentage of time in which the site is publicly accessible and reachable via the internet. This is NOT exactly the same as measuring the Uptime of a system. Uptime refers to the system itself being online. This does not make absolutely sure that your site will be accessible. OK, for the sake of the argument lets assume that uptime and availability are almost the same thing. So, for example, if a site is down (offline) 10.1 minutes a week or 8.76 hours a year the site's availability is almost 99.9%. Not bad at all, ehh? Especially if the system uptime is GUARANTEED. All our hosting solutions can gurantee a 99.9% uptime. What about 100% uptime? Honestly, there's no such thing... What about 99.9999% uptime? Well, there's no such thing either!

Disk Space or storage size is the amount of hard disk space the hosting povider offers for your web pages. All your files (documents, pictures, etc) should fit into this space. The space is usually measured in GigaBytes or MegaBytes (e.g. 500 GB). Sometimes the space is also measured in total number of files (e.g. 50,000 files maximum). A small or medium site may normally need between 10 and 500MB of disk space. In fact the average size of web pages is very small. But if you consider the size of the images used inside these pages, you'll discover that the images are larger than the page itself. Expect each web page to consume between 5 and 500KB of disk space on your server, depending on the use of images or other space-consuming elements. Be carefull! If you use a lot of images, graphic animations (especially music files or videos), you certainly need much more disk space. How will you know how much space you need? Hey, that's easy, but let me give you a tip. Take a look at your local hard disk. Check how much space your site requires locally. In case you use Windows Explorer, simply right-click on the folder where your site is located and choose 'Properties'. But wait a minute! Think you may need to add some files to your site in the future. So double or triple the size, to be sure. What about Unlimited disk space? Be careful there! It's time to give you another tip! Unlimited space does NOT mean infinite! But just a moment! There are dozens of hosting providers that sell packages with unlimited disk space! What does unlimited actually mean? It just means that there isn't a predefined or specific limit value. In other words, when you see a service is listed as unlimited, you should translate it as "Big enough but intended for normal web hosting usage only". In case for example you need to host a site with million of videos like www.youtube.com, will you be able to do that with a shared hosting package that costs around 7 euros a month? The answer obviously is NO WAY! Even if the package includes unlimited disk space. Got it??? We offer a variety of hosting packages with lost of different disk space options. We also use a Clustered storage technology so the storage resources are NOT restricted to a single server, but are distributed between multiple machines. As a result, optimal performance and higher stability is GUARANTEED.

Monthly Traffic or data transfer or file transfer or web traffic is all the data downloaded from your site and transferred to all your visitors from your hosting company's server. The transferred data contain all files on your site (text, images, etc) that can be viewed or downloaded. The traffic is dependent on the size of files you have, as well as on the number of visitors browsing through your site. A small or medium site may normally need between 1GB and 10GB of data transfer per month. Larger, business sites usually more than 100GB of monthly traffic. How will you know how much monthly traffic you need? Hey, that's not so easy, but I'll give you another cool tip. Calculate your average page size. Suppose that is 50 KB. Multiply that by the expected average page visits (views) per month. Assuming that you expect 10,000 views a month, you will need 0.05MB * 20,000 = 1GB traffic. But wait there! Think you may have bigger files or more visits in the future. So double or triple the traffic, to be sure. What about Unlimited traffic? Please read the tip above!

Hosted Domains is the number of different domains the hosting provider package supports. How many domains (different sites) do you need to host? 1 domain might be enough for you. In some other cases you might want to have 2,3 or many more domains hosted.

CPU Usage is the percentage of the server proccessor power that your hosting account is allowed to use. If for example your CPU usage limit is 10% and all the other clients that share the same machine (server) have the same limit, Theoretically there can be up to 10 different client accounts on the same server. The CPU usage limit makes sure that nobody will use too much server power against other clients. Such a thing would't be fair, right?

Control Panel is the main application that allows you to manage your hosting account. For example, you can upload files to the server, add e-mail accounts, study your site's statistics, and so on. Plesk, cPANEL and Hepsia are the most popular control panels. Let me give you a couple of tips here... A good hosting control panel needs to be user-friendly. Before registering a hosting account, you should check a demo of the control panel. Finally, the control panel should support your language. Our control panel supports 10 languages at the moment (including English, Russian, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Dutch, Serbian and Turkish).

Data Center Location is a very important characteristic of any web hosting package and identifes the place where your server and your data actually are. If for example your activities are in Europe, it doesn't make any sense to host your site in a data center in America. But be careful there! It isn't a very wise decision to choose your nearest data center always! Our experience shows that the most reliable data centers in Europe are in England (UK), Germany or Sweden. Avoid data centers that are located in Asia or Africa! Our first data center is in UK near London, so we offer an excellent solution for those of you who live in Europe, Middle East, Asia or Africa. Our second data center is in Chicago, USA. You may select that one in case you are based in the American Continent. Finally, our last data center is located in Sydney, Australia and you should choose it if you like kangaroos or you have businesses near Australia!

HOSTING TERMS OF SERVICE (TOS) or terms and conditions should be included in a document you need to find and read very carefully BEFORE you register a new hosting account! The terms and conditions fully describe the hosting service. Every serious web hosting provider should have such a document on their site. If you don't agree with the provider's terms of service, you should't sign up. Usually the terms are in english language so if your englsh is not very good be careful. Get somebody else to read the terms if you need to. Don't guess "Hey this term should mean abc" because perhaps it might mean a clear "xyz!"

E-mail Accounts is the number of different e-mail accounts the hosting provider package provides. How many official email accounts (e.g. yourname@yourdomain.com) do you need? 5 or 10 accounts should be OK for a personal blog or a small business site. What about Unlimited e-mail accounts? Hey, it seems to me, you haven't read anything from the info above! Please go back to the top of the page!

Site Hosting Types - Shared Hosting, VPS or Dedicated Servers? My God, what is that stuff?

You may check out information about different hosting packages and prices by clicking the image on top. Please have in mind that the most important types of web hosting are:

Shared Hosting means that your site is placed together with other sites (ranging from a few to hundreds or thousands), on the same server connected to the internet. All domains share the resources of the server such as memory (RAM) and the Processor (CPU). This situation is similar to renting a room in a block of flats. It is the cheapest and most common solution for web hosting, as many people share the cost of server maintenance. Renting a room in a block is cool, isn't it? You don't have to care about elevator maintenance or cleaning the basement!

Since we are so cool, we offer many shared hosting packages for different needs that cost between 2.50 euros a month and 10 euros a month! Take advantage of our shared hosting offers!

Shared hosting usually works out very well because most sites don't generate enough traffic or don't use enough server resources. It is perfect for personal blogs or sites, small businesses and even medium-sized or large businesses if their activities fit within the needs of a typical or normal business. A shared hosting service should include system (server) administration. This is an advantage for inexperienced users who don't want to do it themselves, but a disadvantage to power users who want more control. In general, shared hosting will be inappropriate for users who require detailed software development. Almost all (but not all!) basic applications that are supposed to run on a typical web server, work fine within a shared web hosting environment. The majority of shared hosting providers offer more disk space, data transfer and email accounts than most clients need. If every client used their quota and other resources, shared hosting would not work. But since few do, it actually works out quite efficiently.

VPS or Virtual Dedicated Server divides server resources into virtual servers, where resources can be allocated in a way that does not directly reflect the underlying hardware. VPS will often be allocated resources based on a one server to many VPSs relationship, however virtualisation may be done for a number of reasons, including the ability to move a VPS container between servers. The users may have root access to their own virtual space. Customers are sometimes responsible for maintaining the server.

For power users (hey that might be you!), we offer many different economical VPS packages that cost between 15 euros a month and 135 euros a month! Wanna try one of those?

Dedicated hosting service means that the user gets his or her own web server and gains full control over it. Despite that, the user typically does not own the server.

For extra special power users (are you there?),we offer three different dedicated hosting plans that cost between 120 euros a month and 320 euros a month! Nobody can beat our prices!

Semi-Dedicated hosting service is something between shared hosting and dedicated hosting. Very few power users share a web server and gain full control over it.

Do we also offer Semi-Dedicated solutions? Of course we do! We have one simple solution that costs only 25 euros a month and a more advanced plan that costs 45 euros a month.

Free web hosting services are offered by different companies with very limited services, sometimes supported by advertisements, and often very poor when compared to paid hosting. Free hosting is OK if all you need is a personal blog or a very small site with few visitors and very limited features. But free is always cool! Especially if you don't need an official domain name! We'd advise you to check out www.blogger.com and www.wordpress.com to create a free site easily and fastly.

Finally, Reseller web hosting means that a company or individual sells the services of another company that is actually the web hosting provider. Without data centers or physical servers one can promote and sell hosting packages. Why not?
